I feel as if Gastby has taken advantage our friendship. I have the suspicion that the only reason he persued this relationship is to attract Daisy's attention. His sole purpose was to ensure that I would set up a meeting between himself and Daisy. And the meeting felt entirely forced and awkward. I also get the feeling Gatsby also used Jordan to encourage me to set up this meeting. I worry about Daisy at times because of her difficult relationship with Tom. He is a terrible excuse for a human being. He only abuses and manipulates others.

BP Commercials
Emeril Lagasse
The first clip uses glitteringing generalities. For example, he repeatedly says,"We're doing a good job." and uses other glad words. He uses ad populum wheb he metions that he does not know the facts or statistics, but he does know how much the oil spill is affecting the people.
Olympic Athletes
These advertisements use the technique of transfer in order to transfer the positive, patriotic feelings towards the olympic athletes to the company of BP. It also uses red herring to divert the attention away from the issue of the oil spill.
Committment to America
This clip uses plain folks when it shows ordinary looking people enjoying their time on the beaches on the Gulf. It also uses observational selection because it doesn't show any of the negative effects of the oil spill.

Woody Guthrie "This Land is Your Land"
Guthrie believes that America is viewed as a good place, but he questions whether this is entirely true. In the first 3 stanzas, he sings of a postive view of America. He uses lyrics such as "ribbon of highway", "endless skyway", "golden valley", "the sun came shining", etc. These lyrics have a positive connotion. Contrastingly, he takes a different stance in the second half of the song. He uses lyrics such as, "Is this land mad for you and me?" and other phrases with negative connotations such as, "hungry", "shadow" and so on to show that the positive view that many have of America isn't entirely true.

"Where Have You Gone Charming Billy?"
In the excerpt from O'Brien's "Where Have You Gone Charming Billy?" the author uses a dangerous setting and creates a mysterious and ominous mood to make the reader sympathize with the character PFC Paul Berlin. The dangerous setting of the war appeals to the emotions of the reader. The excerpt decribes various hardships of war like the death of fellow soldiers and the fear. This makes us question what may happen later on and makes us concerned for the safety of the character. The author's word choice contibutes to his mood. He uses words such as "dark", "primitive", "afraid", "shadows", etc. which all have negative connotations, contributing to the dark and onimous mood. This mood again makes the reader concerned for the safety of the character and sympathize with him in the many hardships during war.

Television Commercials
The commercial for Country Corn Flakes uses ethos. By mentioning that they are make by General Mills, a well known, trustworthy brand, and showing the General Mills logo, they are building the credibility of the product. The adverisement also makes use of observational selection. It chooses only to mention the positive aspects of the product and excludes information such as the nutrition facts that could be unfavorable.
The commercial for Alka-Seltzer uses logos. It would make logical sense to buy a product that has many uses such as treating heartburn and headaches. The commerical also uses an arguement from omniscience. It insists that Alka-Seltzer is "better than anything you can get without a perscription." They would have to know of all other treatments in order to rightfully make this claim.
The commercial for Delk uses logos. It mentions the various aspects of the service, which is offered at a low price. The commercial also uses an arguement from omniscience. It assumes that their service is the "finest anywhere" although they do not have knowledge of all other services available.

Chain Gang by Sam Cooke
In the song, "Chain Gang", Cooke discusses a chain gang. This is a metaphor for people who waste their lives conforming to others and the routineness of the time. Considering this song was written during the 1960s, it most likely concerns the Civil Rights movement. People during that time were predisposed to discriminate against blacks and it became a routine and common occurance. The song is saying that we should break away from this routine and try sonething new. This is shown through the negative way that the songs portrayed the "chain gang".

"Semeadores" by Diego Rivera
This painting depicts two men in a field who seem to be working. One has a shovel and the other carries something over his shoulder. I think the main idea of this painting is about the hard working, common people. The painting is simple but also draws your eye to the working men. This does show some of the artist's culture because hard work and determination is most likely a key factor in the artist's culture.
